Where is Lac des Dix in Switzerland and how to get there

Lac des Dix in the southwestern part of Switzerland in the Hérémence municipality, within the Val d’Hérens. Getting to the Lac des Dix is easy and convenient. The nearest major town is Sion, located about 25 kilometres away from the lake. You can take a bus from Sion to Hérémence, and then a free shuttle bus is available directly to the lake in the summer months. If you prefer to drive yourself, the roads and motorways are well-marked to make your journey easy. At the base of the dam, you can park your car and take a cable car up for only CHF 10 (including return).

The best time to visit Lac des Dix is in the summer months as you can enjoy more of the action activities that the area has to offer. You and your family can zipline across if you are feeling adventurous! For only CHF 25 for adults and children up to 16 years old for CHF 13. Enjoying a picnic or many of the hiking routes can only be done within the warmer months, so we suggest any time between June to early September as a good time to visit.

During the winter you can still table the cable car up and take in the winter wonderland that is the dam and lake. The lake freezes over during this season and the views are spectacular. Many ski routes take you through the Lac des Dix, so you can plan to see it along with your ski tour if you plan accordingly.

The dam itself was completed in 1961 and is world famous because it’s one of the tallest gravity dams in the world, at 285 metres high. The dam generates hydroelectric power, fueling 4 power stations and is also used for recreational activities.

One of the most popular and recommended trails, especially for groups with children, is the Lac des Dix Path. This trail is relatively easy and suitable for all ages, making it perfect for family outings.

The well-paved trail takes you from one end of the lake to the other. It is just under 15 kilometres with an elevation gain of about 150 meters. The hike typically takes around 4 hours to complete as you travel through 6 illuminated tunnels and meadows. The path is well-marked and provides spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

If you prefer something a bit more challenging, then the Grande Dixence Dam to Pas de Chèvres is a suitable hike. It is 8 kilometres in distance and has a high elevation gain. For expert hikers, this should take between 3-4 hours to complete. This trail is made famous for its iconic ladder steps at Pas de Chèvres.

When preparing for a hike, always check weather conditions before leaving. Wear the appropriate gear, like sturdy and comfortable hiking boots and bring layered clothing to adjust to the changing weather conditions throughout the trail.
